The Opportunity:

 

We are currently looking to hire the services of an Indigenous Engagement Specialist in Edmonton, Alberta. This position will be a contract position working 1-2 times per week.  

 

As the Indigenous Engagement Specialist, you will:

 

  • Be responsible for engaging youth, families, community, and organization's staff in culturally enhanced programming.
  • Play a key role in developing and implementing culturally appropriate wellness options within central region to support each youth in reaching their full potential.

 

Who You Are:

 

As an Indigenous Engagement Specialist, you possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

 

  • A strong knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, customs, and beliefs
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate and/or assist in the history of Indigenous Peoples, Cultural Teachings/Ceremonies, Sacred Family Circles/Family Group Conferences
  • Understanding of current and emerging issues of importance to Indigenous people and communities
  • Knowledge of Indigenous language (s) will be a definite asset
  • Good understanding of health issues affecting youth and adults, such as FASD, drug and alcohol addictions, intergenerational trauma, mental health, suicide and other behavioural issues
  • Good understanding of cultural differences and how they impact wellness approaches for children and youth
  • Good verbal and written communication skills with proven organizational and documentation skills
  • Previous experience working with children, youth and families would be a definite asset.
  • Willing to work flexible hours that meet the needs of the children and families (may include some evenings and weekends).
  • A diploma/degree in Indigenous Studies or Human Services disciplines would be an asset; however, a combination of formal and/or informal training will be honored and considered.
  • Previous experience to facilitate and/or assist in cultural training/ceremonies is preferred. Please note: if education is in Social Work, the candidate must be registered Social Worker with the Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW)

 

Other qualifications include:

 

  • You are certified in First Aid and certified as a CPR Level C.
  • You have a valid and current Class 5 Drivers License and proper vehicle insurance coverage.
  • You have passed a criminal record check and vulnerable sector check. 
  • You have the physical wellness and mental health awareness to handle daily exercise routine and other requirements as prescribed by the care plan and a high capacity for managing stressful situations.
